Canada Games Athletes

Victoria Ralph

Age: 19 years

Hometown: Carbonear, Newfoundland

Education: Studying Kinesiology at Memorial University

Triathlon Experience: Competed in Kids of Steel in elementary school and junior high.  First sprint triathlon was completed in Carbonear in 2006 where I placed first in under 20 female, and have continued participation in the event since then.  The 2007 St. John’s Olympic distance triathlon was the next challenge for me where I placed first in under-20 female and was the twelfth female overall.  In 2008 I raced in the St. John’s sprint triathlon where I placed first in the female division and second overall.

Appeal: The sport triathlon caught my eye back in grade 9 when I witnessed my first race in Corner Brook, which was the Ironman.  Watching the athletes push themselves to the limit in the water and on the hills sparked a desire to try it out, so I did.  My father also competed in the St. John’s Triathlon so I knew a little about the sport before.  It is definitely the most challenging and most exciting sport to compete in.

Other Sports:  In high school I competed in soccer, track and field, cross country, wrestling, basketball, badminton, and ball hockey, my favorite sports being cross country and wrestling. In 2005, I went to the Canada Games in Regina for wrestling placing 7th. I also competed in the National Juvenile Wrestling Championships in 2007 and 2008 and won bronze both years.  Aside from the Canada Games Triathlon Team, I am a member of the MUN Cross Country and Wrestling Teams as well.

Motivation: I enjoy getting out and pushing myself everyday to become a better swimmer, and runner.  There is always space for improvement in the triathlon.

Training: I am currently training 6 days a week, getting in 4 swims, 3-4 runs, and 4 bike rides.  The hills surrounding Carbonear make for great bike training, while my running consists of track workouts, tempo runs, and also long distance runs.  Luckily there is a pool here in Carbonear and many ponds in the area for swimming training.

Astrid Peacock

Age: 19

Hometown: Carbonear, NL

Education: Currently studying Philosophy and French literature at McGill University

Triathlon experience: Started competing in 2006

Appeal of triathlon: Triathlon combines three sports I enjoy. I especially enjoy lake and ocean swimming and have recently completed a 5.2 km ocean swim on Vancouver Island, BC. Cycling has been a passion of mine for many years, culminating in a ride from Victoria BC to Calgary last summer. Running was my main area of concentration for many years. I have competed in events from 1500 m to a full marathon.

Other sports: I have been involved in soccer, basketball, badminton, volleyball, softball, rugby, cross country running and track and field. I have been very involved in Kenpo karate since age 5 and have a first degree black belt. Scuba diving is another of my passions and I am certified to the level of rescue diver.

Motivation: I enjoy training and competing in all sections of triathlon.

Training: During the last school year I trained six days a week with the McGill triathlon team. Presently I am running four times a week, swimming three to four times a week and cycling four times a week.

Hopes for Canada Games: Should I make the Canada Games team, I hope that my teammates and I will give our best possible effort and that I will achieve a personal best on race day.

Jon Allan is 17 years old and currently lives in corner brook, NL. After this year at Corner Brook Regional high school is finished, jon plans to attend MUN and do his first year engineering. Jon has been competing in triathalons since he was 5 years old, doing any kids of steel competitions he could. Jon is also captain of his high school basketball team and plays soccer in the summer. If Jon is selected for the summer games, he plans to get a new girlfriend in every province.

Jonathon Slaney

Age 19

Hometown: St.Lawrence, NL

Currently Studying Engineering at Memorial. I graduated from St.Lawrence Academy, athlete of the year 2007-2008

Triathlon Experience: I am very new to the sport of triathlon. The paradise sprint triathlon will be my first official triathlon. I participated in the Oliver's pond fun event and completed some triathlon course training sessions.

The swim: My first lane swim was a little over a year ago, with Jon Lodge. He is a great friend of mine and despite my inexperience, helped me learn freestyle. since then I have worked on my own to get up to speed, and now I attend masters swim practice as often as I can.

The bike: I have had a fascination with the bike since I was a young kid. I have been riding cross country for years. This year, I discovered road cycling. I have logged many miles over the past few months and look forward to more cy
cling.

The run: I started running when I was 14. I figured that if I was going to be an athlete, than why not get fit. Then I decided to run cross country. I wanted my best, and the only way to do that is to run flat out. Until I had nothing left.

Putting the elements together is a terrific idea. I look forward to a triathlon future.

Motivation: I feel motivated to bust my %$& in all disciplines.

Training: I swim 3-4 times per week with a focus on drill and technique. I try to get into the pond at least once a week. I cycle 4 times per week, which has become very addicting. I run 3 times a week, with a track workout, long intervals and a brick workout.

Canada Games. I am trying out for the NL track team, in 5000m, and the NL triathlon team. If I travel to the Canada Games, I plan to do my very best to represent Newfoundland and Labrador.

Good luck to all.
